Album Review: Deer Tick – “Negativity”

Bagel, contributor

I really like the album cover for Deer Tick’s new offering “Negativity.” Unfortunately, that’s about all there is to like.

The instrumentation is fine, the band is obviously talented, but it’s hard to pay attention to anything besides the painfully distracting
vocals. The unique attributes of singer John McCauley’s voice is too large of an issue for me. He’s an “all or nothing” gamble and like many groups with such distinctive vocalists, you’re either going to love him or hate him. I can’t get past his inflection, and it hurts to try. I’m not even sure what he’s saying because it’s too painful to focus.

When you’re drawn in by album art at the record store, try to remember that not everything is as pretty on the inside as it is on the outside.

Don’t judge a book by its cover.
