Music Review: The Chipmunks The Chipmunk Adventure Soundtrack

Leah Brzezinski, contributor

I don’t exactly understand what this band The Chipmunks is going for, or what drugs they might be on. They’re sort of like The Mamas and the Papas, with 3 guys and 3 gals singing alternating male/female features with group tracks, except they sound like they’re sucking helium or are weird children or dwarves or something. It’s also possible they recorded the songs really slow then played them back at a faster speed.

There are some really odd pronunciations, and the high-pitched pop harmonization quickly becomes pretty annoying. Not to mention some seriously questionable cultural competency (apologies to all Mexicans everywhere for “I, Yi, Yi, Yi, Yi / Cuanto Le Gusta”). Plus, the subject matter is juvenile and musical theater-ish. Lame, cheesy lyrics like, “We are the girls / boys of rock n’ roll,” “My mother / that’s who I need” and a really stupid cover of “Wooly Bully.”

I can’t understand why I still kind of like it.

Rating: 6 out of 12 cans of PBR!!!
