America. Whiskey. Tumbleweeds. Moustache. These are the feelings I had while listening to Bad Honky, the new EP from Shunt McGuppin (AKA Superego’s Jeremy Carter). In just five songs, McGuppin encapsulates what it is to be a human animal in this wild world.
The opener, “Yesterday’s Porn,” reminds us that sometimes looking back on the past can be the saddest part of the journey. In one poignant moment, McGuppin artfully rhymes “porn” with “the women aren’t even shorn.” You said it, Shunt.
If you like history, then you’ll love the very historically-accurate track “Grover Cleveland.” The song starts off as a slow campfire soother and builds to a climactic finish with a guitar solo that will have you saying, “‘Free Bird’ who?”
But the highlight of this release is “Chump and Clown,” a foot-stompin’, beer-chuggin’ party tune that makes Hank Williams Jr. sound like a goddamn daddy’s boy pussy.
